Job Interview Tips

Applying for a new job can be tough enough, so when you are invited to interview for a position, you want to put your best foot forward. Below are some job interview tips for candidates—a list of do’s and don’ts.

Job Interview Do’s

  1. Be on time! Candidates should be at the interview, ready to go 10-15 minutes early. Give yourself plenty of time to get to the interview. It’s better to be early and sit in the parking lot for a few minutes than get caught in traffic and be late.
  2. Be polite to everyone. Everyone you encounter as you interview, from the front desk staff to people in the parking lot could have an impact on whether or not you receive a job offer. This interview tip is not just about being a good job candidate, but a good human. Just be nice and polite. Greet people with a smile.
  3. Bring a couple of copies of your resume with you, just in case. At the very least you can reference it if needed.
  4. Pay attention to the instructions provided by the interviewer. Are masks required for the interview (assume they are and wear one)? Do you need to park somewhere specific? Watch for these details and act accordingly.
  5. Do ask questions! Before the interview research the position, and the company and write down any questions you may have. You can find some sample questions here.

Job Interview Don’ts

  1. Don’t lie or exaggerate. It’s okay to admit that you’re not proficient in a skill even if it’s listed in the job description. Skills can be taught to the right candidate, however, if you are hired and they believe you already have the knowledge you set yourself up for failure.
  2. Don’t speak negatively about a previous or current employer. Even if you have a good reason, speaking too negatively about a supervisor can leave a bad taste in the interviewer’s mouth.
  3. Don’t be afraid to admit that you’re a bit nervous. You’re human!

Finally, when the interview is over, do write a thank you note. A handwritten note, or even a thoughtful email, will show a potential employer you’re a professional that they should consider hiring.
