How relief work works

For relief vets, techs and assistants

  • Know how you're paid. W-2 part-time staff get taxes withheld. 1099 contractors invoice the clinic and handle their own taxes, insurance and licensing costs.
  • Agree terms in writing. Shift length, day or hourly rate, overtime, cancellation notice and when you'll be paid.
  • Ask about the setup. Practice software, controlled-drug access, who your backup is and what a normal caseload looks like.
  • Carry your credentials. Your license or credential must be valid in the state you're working in. Check with that state's board before you travel.
  • Pay context. Relief pay is set per shift, and BLS doesn't track it separately. Staff medians for comparison: veterinarians $62.55/hr, vet techs $22.78/hr (BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2025).

For clinics hiring relief

  • Post it as Part Time or Contract/1099 so it shows here and in relief alerts. Put "relief" or "per diem" in the title.
  • List the dates and the rate. Specific shifts and a clear rate fill faster than "flexible".
  • Make day one easy. Logins, a short orientation sheet and a named go-to person.
  • Need cover fast? Mark the job as an urgent shift. Urgent shifts get a badge and sit at the top of this page.

BLS figures are employer-reported wages for all workers in the occupation (credentialed or not), before bonuses and benefits. Annual pay assumes 2,080 hours. Buying power = median pay ÷ (state price level ÷ 100).
